National Schools Sports Week
It’s National School Sports week and what better way to acknowledge this than sharing a few insights from the recent Active Lives, Children and Young People survey conducted by Sport England.
Just 47% of children (3.5m) are meeting the Chief Medical Officers’ guidelines of taking part in an average of 60 minutes or more of sport and physical activity a day.
A whopping 53% of kids are not even close.
The governments new strategy “Get Active” aims to set a target of 1 million more active children than in 21/22 by 2030 and a recent letter (available to view via Health Club Management) to party leaders, signed by over 200 fitness industry businesses, outlined the following objectives -
As a sector we need to start thinking about how we cater for the younger generations in particular if we want our kids to remain active into their teenage and early adulthood years. After-all, they are our future consumers, members and advocates.
Some of our clients and industry friends are already doing a phenomenal job to improve participation rates - helping to make physical activity more accessible, appealing and achievable for all; Davis Sport and Fitronics with their CoursePro software.
How could we do better?
How could we work together?
How could we create a more active lifestyle for our children?
How can we engage this population to encourage, motivate and excite them into becoming more active?
Do we have the coaches, teachers and instructors with the appropriate character skills to develop and inspire our children?
